Lomaqatsi

Many years ago, I was introduced to the Qatsi trilogy of films by Godfrey Reggio, based on prophetic teachings and beliefs of the Hopi Indian Tribe. The trilogy explores our modern day life during what the Hopi refer to as Tuwaqachi, the fourth world in time, which they believe is soon coming to an end.

The first film, Koyaanisqatsi - (a world out of balance) depicts a world in chaos, moral corruption, "a state of life that calls for another way of living".

The second, Powaqqatsi - (a life in transformation) explores the effect that technology and modern lifestyle of the masses have on smaller cultural communities, luring them away from their traditions and way of life, to create a global culture.

The final film, Naqoyqatsi - (life as war), intimates a vision of the need for technology overtaking, even consuming the natural world... not only permitted but encouraged by those who live technology as a way of life.

If Hopi legend is true, and the fourth world is ending, giving birth to the fifth world, we are at a crossroads. Depending on the path we choose, we will either face complete collapse of society or be one step closer to Lomaqatsi - a world of balance, a world of abundance. To find that path, I believe it's time to take a long hard look at how we live and try to be more mindful of how our individual choices affect our planet and its peoples. To help our world to become a "world in balance", I believe we must find balance in our individual lives. Through cooperation and conscious thought, we may be able to rediscover how to tap into the positive energy flow of the universe, creating a world of harmony and abundance.
